How social forces shape our understanding of and actions toward health, illness, healing. There are 3 main versions of social construction that apply to medical sociology: spector + kituse: generated considerable research, based on social problems definition: Activities of individuals making assertions of grievances regarding some conditions . Are social problems objectively real or claims made by problem finders with a purpose: based on european, post-modern thinking. Production of scientific facts/knowledge is the result of mutually-conceived actions by scientists in labs combined with their efforts to promote their work in public venues: phil brown: combo symbolic interactionism + structuralist-political economic approach. Social construction of illness deals with illness experience; symbolic interactionism helps. Social causation is the main theme behind this version. Three types of social causation: underlying social causes: class, race, ethnicity, religion, etc, proximate social causes: neighborhood, migration status, workplace hazards, etc, mediating social causes: social support, networks, marital status, etc.
