SOC236H5 Lecture 8: Lecture 8-March 1st, 2018
Document Summary
Social protest against economic inequality and economic injustice. Maybe globalization is good, or maybe it"s bad, or perhaps it"s some mix of the two. Globalization requires us to rethink space, time, and speed in ways that make columbus"s voyage seem quaintly part of a world we no longer know When a good half of the global population lives either in poverty or at the risk of falling into poverty, the poverty problem is global in both senses of the world-everywhere and across the globe. Yet it would be silly to suggest that the globalizing world is somehow nothing but misery. it is not. Still, in the large historical sense it is at least a huge disappointment. At a time when we know better and, collectively, have the wealth and know-how to make the world better around. Globalization is as old as can be and globalization is new.
