SOC231H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Georg Simmel
Document Summary
Thinking of contradiction and ambiguity, characteristic of contemporary life. Do we include simmel in the photo with the other theorists. Focused on how things are produced, enacted within society. Situates him at the intersection of big assumption, big debate (internalism and externalism) Society exists as a separate reality outside of individuals, and it is independent and coercive. Society is not something external, outside, it"s internal. He is trying to figure out a debate. It is an event, something that is produced in those interactions, internalist, kind of, a bit of an externalist. There are mediate and crystallized interactions, languages (adapt, change, work within, adapt slowly) only meaningful when used in ac interaction, structure of language is slow down. A sociology of interaction: form vs. content, social types. He is trying to do a theory of social process, develop a vocabulary. Put sociology in a scientific plane, to think about what we are studying, analogy is with geometry (spatial form, abstract)
