Document Summary
The education system in canada was tied to what was happening economically, politically, and socially. No one was really in charge of creating and nurturing a school system. Canada was largely rural, agricultural, emphasis on physical labour especially on the farm. Schools not in every community, and even where there were schools, not every kid went; not a lot of participation in a school system. Children"s knowledge passed down to them from family; learned on the farm . Children economically useful ; children a source of in-house labour for you on the farm disincentive to send your child to school. Skilled trades apprenticeship system (closest thing to a schooling system was the apprenticeship system); informal; small-scaled. Confederation provinces became responsible for developing a school system. Still large variation in schooling across the country. Religious groups were the dominate force behind the creation and development of schools at this time.
