SOC221H5 Lecture 10: SOC221 Tutorial 5
Document Summary
When 2 variables don"t directly relate but relate based on third variable. Ex. number of bathrooms at home affect grades. Strange reasoning but there is a third variable - because parent ses influences both number of bathrooms in house because they can afford bigger hour and they can support child"s education better which allows better grades. There is a non-spurious relation between ses and both variables. But both variable - washroom number and grades - are spurious. Computer with internet connection causes higher grades. Also affected by parents ses - both - which is a third factor. Both groups tested at beginning and end - see how one group responds and other doesn"t. Measure both control and experimental again - measure control to assure it"s the same because we can"t assume that. Test whether adding math videos to curriculum affects math grades or not. Random assignment is important - give one group stimulus and keep one as control.
