At the bar: in a growing number of cases, defendants are portraying themselves as the victims new york times. Meek-mate syndrome is when someone feels psychologically emasculated by their partner. This may be due being forced to sleep on the floor, being called names, and thus destroying their self-esteem. Urban survival syndrome is the fear that inner-city black people have of other black people. Psychologist, john monahan, labels these various defense new victimization defenses as opposed to insanity or self-defence defenses because they should not be taken too seriously. Most juries roll their eyes and convict those that use these new victimization defenses . Monahan defines the new victimization defense as a perpetrator claiming they are a victim of their situation or personal prejudices (not insanity) and couldn"t help themselves. They believe they aren"t responsible for their actions.
