Social control happens because we are socialized to behave and conform to the norms around us in society. two specific ways of informal social control. Folkways: established norms of common practice (change from one culture to another). embedded within the culture. Mores: social norms associated with right or wrong (morality) taboo: incest and murder (don"t vary as much by culture) If someone goes against one of these, they can be subject to informal or formal social control based on the deviance they displayed. Goal is to maintain a stable society. informal social control: ridicule, public criticism. It comes within the social group, no central administration. It"s generated by the social group itself. informal are more effective in small homogenous communities (durkheim mechanical society) In a heterogeneous society if you wanted to dye your hair pink and be covered in piercings and such, it"s easier than it would be in a homogenous society.
