The era of the penitentiary focused on incapacitation and deterrence in the early to mid-1800s. The pennsylvania system of penitentiaries relied on silence and separation of inmates. The auburn system of penitentiaries relied on silence as well but allowed inmates to congregate. Both, however, kept inmates isolated from outside society, leading to mental, emotional, and physical illness. Highly controlled environment with inmate movement strictly controlled. Highly structured environments in which all movements of the inmates are controlled 24 hours a day by staff. This term was first coined by irving goffman in 1961 in the book asylums. Patterns of interaction and the relationships that exist among inmates. Process by which inmates become socialized into the norms, values, and culture of the prison. Inmates who have become prisonized to such a degree that they are unable to function in the outside free community.
