Document Summary

Women offend at a much lower rate than men. 4 male offenders to every 1 female offender. 1/3rd of men have a criminal conviction by age of 35: 8% of women have. Women mostly commit welfare fraud, theft under 5000 and prostitution. Women tend to be convicted of less serious offences. A majority of female offenders have had a history of victimization in prisons; about 75% in provincial, 80 in federal and 95% of aboriginals. Women"s addictions are tied to their victimization, happens to men too but the rates are much lower. Women engage in the drug trade but they only transport drugs. Women are often recharged because they didn"t meet their bail requirements. Crime was thought to be the result of individual psychological issues of women. It was assumed that it was the inherent nature of women. Crime was a choice and there was an emergence of different classes of women; good and bad (criminal) women.
