Document Summary
Research cycle: formulate question, review, select method, collect data, analyze data, report results, no knowledge of other participants (other authors, reviewer) Terminology remains consistent but the variables under observation change: variable: a concept that can take on more than one value, independent variable (x): the presumed cause in a cause-and-effect. Blind peer review assesses the quality of the work: dependent variable(y): the presumed effect in a cause-and-effect relationship relationship. Correlation/association = the distinct relationship between x and y. Population: the entire group about which the researcher wants to generalize. Probability sampling = everyone in the population has an equal likelihood of getting selected (random procedure) Non-probability sampling = researcher has a sense ahead of time of wo and how many people they want to talk to (not random sampling; not left up to chance) Test a relationship between x y via an experiment. Pro: the method in sociology where causation can be established.
