As government put more police on the street. More education, more opportunity, less chance of violence. Underlying causes of crime too hard for government to do. Very expensive to put more police officers on street. If you cannot avoid the situation you will probably not do it. The world is created, we create the world and meaning. No way to understand without getting into the group of meaning. Only way to understand experience is to go directly and find the meaning. Inductive approach, start with specific understanding and build it through experience. Hawthorn effect: they act of being observed changes people"s behaviour. Field research: -classifying and counting -develop deep, sympathetic understanding of social world immersion eg. Surveys and interviews: -ask people about their knowledge, attitudes, behaviour close-ended, semi-structured, unstructured eg. Analysis of existing or official sources: -documents created by others for purposes other than sociological research. Allows researchers to isolate causes and measure their effects.
