Document Summary
January 17, 2013: commonsense perspective vs. sociological perspective, sociology provides a unique perspective through different theories. Culture refers to the symbolic and learned aspects of human society. Judged in relation to the majority culture, aka the popular culture. Since it"s a valuable possession, only a small amount of people can possess it. If too many people have it, won"t be high culture anymore: ethnic culture is the sum of traditions, practices, languages, symbols, values, ideologies and material objects that are associated with a cultural minority group. Judged in relation to, or often from, the perspective that majority ethnic culture is, known as ethnocentrism. It"s a product of social process that leads us to identify people as part of a group. Defines someone"s identity, it is who they are and they can"t change it. It has a negative connotation since it reduces a person to stereotypes without knowing their personality.
