Ethnicity: perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant, ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, etc. Symbolic interactionism: development of racial and ethnic labels, and ethic and racial identity, process of negotiation, racial or ethnic identity vs-imposed identity, symbolic ethnicity. Racism: belief that a visible characteristic of a group indicates group inferiority and justifies discrimination, racialization, prejudice, discrimination, power. Types of racism: bigotry, open, conscious expression of racial views. Institutional racism: bias inherent in social institutions, friendly racism, subtle and hidden expressions of racism, examples, white privilege, racial preference, housing discrimination. Involves one race or ethnic group subjugating another in the same country: prevents assimilation by segregating the subordinate groups in terms of jobs, housing and social contracts.
