Roles: behaviour expected of a person occupying a particular position in society. A sense of individual identity, in relation to others. Gender is taught, socialization of different standards. Mastering basic skills required for society, family. Secondary socialization becomes more important than primary socialization over time (friend"s influence become more powerful that family"s influence on a person) Symbolic interactionism: early gender socialization, self-fulfilling prophecy. Consists of individuals of similar age and status. Rejection, rebellion, discord, lifestyle, parental values, experiment with new elements-is not always a bad thing. Gender roles for both males and females, set of behaviours associated with widely. You can use media to change who you are shared expectations about how genders should act. When powerful socialization agents deliberately cause rapid change in people"s values, roles and self-conception. Segregation from old status, degradation/disorientation, acceptance of new culture. Setting in which people are isolated from the larger society. People"s identities change faster, more often, and more completely.
