Mass media- print, radio, television, and other communication technologies that reach many people. Functionalism- mass media performs a function by coordinating the operation of industrial and post-industrial societies. Also, they are important agents of socialization, entertainment and ensure conformity (reproduce moral order- by showing serials like cid where they promote law and order) Conflict theory- mass media support core societal values: media ownership, media bias- advertising and sourcing. Cultural studies- focus not just on the cultural meaning that producers try to transmit but also on the way audiences filter and interpret mass media messages in the context of their own interests, experiences and values. Feminist approach- mass media portrays women in stereotypical settings- buying household products and ignoring serious issues like wage discrimination. Media imperialism- domination of mass medium by a single national culture and the undermining of other national cultures, eg. america domination on the internet.
