Buddhism came out of the same sort of historical complex and time period around which jainism sprang. The four noble truths and eight-fold path. What is buddhism: historically descriptively: a religious movement that began around 500 bce in northeastern india, founded by siddhartha gautama, an elite member of the shakya clan. Tibet, mongolia, and japan- and formerly much more (china, korea, etc: now a global religion of exceptionally diverse forms. Siddhartha gautama: son of suddhodana of kapilavastu, a leader of the shakya people: and maya devi ( his mother) Some uncertainty concerning dates: context: city state (?) of eastern india, on the far border of the heartland of vedic. The magadha cultural area: a period of urbanization, rapid economic growth, and social change, a period of intense religious questioning; skepticism towards orthodox hinduism, and the rise of new religious movements.
