Document Summary

Hunter, schellenberg, & shimmack (2008) experiment conducted in tutorial. Some musical characteristics are reliable predictors of happy and sad responding. Two most reliable: fast tempo = happy; slow tempo = sad, major key = happy; minor key = sad (major and minor keys are the two most common modes for western music) Factorial design: 48 stimuli: a: 12 fast-minor. Happy and sad feature: b: 12 fast-minor, c: 12 slow-major, d: 12 slow-minor. From the literature, we expect happy responses to be highest for a, lowest for d, and intermediate for b and c. Circumplex model: you have high arousal stimuli on one end (top of the circle) and lower arousal stimuli at the bottom. Using music is a great way to answer this question, why: we can independentlt manipulate the factors, change tempo without changing the key. Mixed emotion: happy and sad rating might be higher for song with mixed cues.
