PSY374H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Memory Span, Eye Tracking, Bacon
Document Summary
Lecture 4: processes of sentences (8. 4, 8. 5, 8. 6) Previous/ current approach: how to deal with incoming input. Kamide et al. , 2003: spoken language eye tracking. Interested on what people look at before the sentence ends. People have linked girl and ride as well as man and ride and built expectations. Listeners ca predict upcoming referents (who/what will be referred to next) based on semantic info (from verb) Even before the listener hears the key part of the sentence. Reflected a combination of previously heard subjects and verbs. Study using japanese: japanese has the verb at the end of the sentence. The participants anticipated that the waitress would bring something - looked at hamburger. W/ case makers: show if the noun is the subject/ indirect object/ direct object. Predicted next word soon after hearing the beginning of the verb -similar study by borovsky et al. , 2012 (b/w children and adults) that had a similar result.
