PSY341H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Maternal Deprivation, Social Isolation, Erik Erikson
Document Summary
Children"s problems must be considered in relation to multiple levels of influence - individual, family, community, culture. Factors in each area impact and interact with the other areas. Studying normal development informs our theories of abnormal development. Clinical and research activity begins with theoretical formulations for guidance and information. Theory: a language of science that allows us to assemble and communicate. Theory: a language of science that allows us to assemble and communicate existing knowledge effectively to parents, teachers, etc. Etiology: the study of the causes of childhood disorders. What is at the cause of this abnormal behavior. Multiple, interactive causes help in understanding the complexity of disorders. Children and environments are interdependent - transactional view. Continuity: changes are predictive of future behavior patterns. Discontinuity: changes are not predictive of future behaviour patterns. No single theoretical orientation explains various behaviours or disorders. Always need to consider more than model as a cause.
