Abnormal behaviour: deviating from the norm for an extended period of time: statistical criteria, cultural norms, developmental norms, frequency, intensity, duration. Depends on how long condition persists, situational (ex. extreme sadness) Benefit: if you get the diagnosis right away, you can be treated right away. So, people who have below average iq are abnormal: cultural norms. Praying to god some people say they see god. Getting undressed in class is abnormal but in the locker room it"s completely normal: developmental norms. Hitting someone is battery/assault that you can get charged for if you"re an adult but if you"re 7 years old it"s normal because they haven"t learned to control their actions well yet: frequency, intensity, duration. You"re behaviour in a dysfunctional way that interferes with your social interactions and your work. Etiological models of abnormal behaviour: medical-disease models. Learning models: cognitive behavioural therapy is relearning how you think about yourself and the world.
