Psy340 lec5: mood disorders and somatoform dissociative disorders. Anxiety is a mood, therefore anxiety is an emotional state. From dsm5 the term mood has been eliminated. The term on dsm 4 was used to communicate different disorders of depression. Depression is not flat affect (an elimination of mood), it"s actually a sad affect. Sad affect: disorders where you have intense sadness where you can"t do anything else. Enjoyment cannot be felt, things that are supposed to make you feel is not there. Sad is an emotion, so it"s not an affect. It"s normal to feel sad, just like how anxiety is normal. It"s an adaptive emotion, something bad happen to you you feel sad, the motivation attached to it is getting away from it. It becomes dysfunctional when you can"t get away from it or when over a long period of time, when its sooo intense that you can"t work, interact with people
