PSY333H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, Cardiovascular Disease, Cardiac Arrhythmia
Lecture 6
Chapters 3-5
The Cardiovascular Stress Response Step 2
- endothelial cells help to pump blood
- secrete nitric oxide which helps to secrete blood
The Cardiovascular Stress Response Step 3
- Water helps blood to remain viscous
- Body re-absorbs water via vasopressin (anti-diuretic)
- On diuretic, makes you pee all the time
- Athletes – you need water, WHY?
o Water helps to get oxygen, nutrients to muscles
- Why pee your pants if you are really stressed?
o Dead weight
o Because bladder is uni-directional
▪ Nothing can go back
▪ Can only go one way out
The Cardiovascular Stress Response Recovery
- shutting down the stress-response system
Chronic Stress and Cardio Disease
- can lead to cardiovascular disease over time
- What is high BP?
o 140/90
- Why is blood pressure going up?
o Obesity/lack of exercise
- Step 2
o Vulnerable part of a capillary
▪ The intersections between them
▪ They are branches
• Risky part because anytime you have a branch have a thinner spot, and have
huge amount of blood pressure pumping in trying to split off
o Putting a lot of pressure on it
o Very difficult to control
▪ As hypertension goes on, those vessels become more resistant
• Increases blood pressure even more
o Become hardened
▪ Vascular resistance – do’t ope ad shut
flexibly
- Step 3
o Left ventricular hypertrophy
▪ Lop-sided part
• Results in irregular heartbeat
o Super strong predictor of cardiovascular disease
o Bifurcation – where capillaries meet
o As hypertension continues, pits and tears along artery walls
- Step 4
o Pits and tears can happen on the outside of the vessel
▪ As well as the endothelial cells
o CRP
▪ Indicator of inflammation

Document Summary
Endothelial cells help to pump blood secrete nitric oxide which helps to secrete blood. On diuretic, makes you pee all the time. Athletes you need water, why: water helps to get oxygen, nutrients to muscles. Why pee your pants if you are really stressed: dead weight, because bladder is uni-directional, nothing can go back, can only go one way out. The cardiovascular stress response recovery shutting down the stress-response system. Chronic stress and cardio disease can lead to cardiovascular disease over time. Why is blood pressure going up: obesity/lack of exercise. Increases blood pressure even more: become hardened, vascular resistance do(cid:374)"t ope(cid:374) a(cid:374)d shut flexibly. Step 3: left ventricular hypertrophy, lop-sided part, results in irregular heartbeat, super strong predictor of cardiovascular disease, bifurcation where capillaries meet, as hypertension continues, pits and tears along artery walls. Step 4: pits and tears can happen on the outside of the vessel, as well as the endothelial cells, crp.
