Emotions arise from organisms perceptions (appraisals) of environmental changes that are relevant for its well being. Similar events can provoke different emotions in different people or different times. Evaluation of an event that is assigned value in relation to a persons concerns or goals. Not necessarily objective things that lead to specific emotional outcomes. Example: test taking elicits different emotions in different people. appraisal of coming into a situation where they are not prepared will lead to stress. Whereas an appraisal of being prepared will elicit a more calm emotion. Amygdala - figures out what is good or bad in environment and acting in response to that. Took people who had snake or spider phobias and then controls with no phobias. Masked = shown a chair, but 30 milliseconds before hand they see one of the 4 images. Unmasked = just shown a picture of one of the 4 images.
