Perceived relational value: stresses and strains arise when we perceive others to value their relationship with us less than we want them to, rejection lowers our perceived relational value challenges our fundamental need to belong. Individual differences: some individuals especially hurt by rejection, high anxious attachment, low self-esteem. People already have worries about their self-worth and abandonment: some not as much, high avoidant attachment they already feel uncomfortable being too close to others. If our partner interacts with another attractive person we might be jealous if we engage in social comparison: rivals who make us look bad, rivals with greater mate value. Paternity uncertainty from an evolutionary perspective, man should be more threatened by sexual infidelity because if their partners have sex with other men then the child that they raised together might not be his. Differential investment women invest a lot in raising one child, and so they really depend on their partners investment.
