Document Summary
The self provides a set of expectations/guidelines that allows us to do certain things. This allows us to interpret the events that occur; to interpret the meaning of our life experiences. The self allows us to make meaning of our experiences. Ex. if i get an a on a test, that means that i put in a lot of effort and worked hard. I can also attribute my high achievement to my intelligence or being good at taking tests. The organizational self allows us to maintain a picture of our self in relation to other people (the world). We make these social comparisons to realize where we stand in relation to other people. (ex. if you get a higher mark than your classmates, you realize you are doing better than others). The organizational self helps us to cement social bonds. The self also allows us to make sure we engage in behaviors that are socially acceptable according to norms.
