PSY311H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Parenting Styles, Collectivism, Restrictiveness
Document Summary
Reciprocal influence between parents and children: difficult to demonstrate direct effects of parenting outcomes. Hard to differentiate biological contributions and environmental contributions: reciprocal. Socialization from parents to children and then back from children to parents. Influence one another and the child is niche picking. Origin of parental behavior: universal attributes. Examples: loving children unconditionally, need to prepare child for life: culture-specific attributes. Examples: how religious the culture is, collectivistic vs individualistic cultures, discipline (i. e. physical punishment), strictness in parents: individual attributes. Within culture, there are differences in the ways parents raise their children. Parental belief systems: what parents think about parenting is just as important as hat they actually do as parents: precursor to what we do as parents, develop ideas through our experiences, opinions change once they become parents. Focus on individual attributes and differences in parenting. Permissive: let the child do whatever they want. Restrictive: say no all the time even if request is reasonable: warmth/hostility.
