PSY311H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Cooperative Learning
Document Summary
Regardless of category, friends are important to children. Being popular and having friends are not the same thing. Often it is the neglected kids that have one or two good friends which is very good for them psychologically. The popular kids could have lots of people around them but not have a few true friends. So psychologists are sometimes more worried about the popular kids. Functions of friendships (hartup, 1992): contexts for acquisition of basic social skills, provide knowledge of self, other, and the world, provide emotional support. And friends: serve as forerunners for subsequent relationships (marital, parental) by providing experience in intimacy and mutual regulation. Getting experience in relationships is a very good thing and it can predict how successful you will be in other relationships. Regulation is very important; keeping things calm, etc; and friendships help to develop these skills. Conditions associated with friendlessness: to have emotional problems.
