PSY311H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Most of the research has focused on security of attachment (ainsworth and others). Experimental procedure manipulates the level of exposure of an infant to strange situations: could provide causal information. If child shows protest then some attachment has developed. The strange situation- we manipulate the strangeness of this experiment both by the attachment figure will be there, and also if a stranger will be there. Great for early childhood, but later on it doesn"t work and is not appropriate. Dependent variable: how much protest the child shows when mom leaves. Stranger enters, silent, talks to mom, plays with infant. North american research in the late 70s: child shows moderate levels of proximity seeking, upset when she leaves, but greets her positively upon her return. Moderate proximity seeking because child has the sense that mom will always be there; doesn"t have to cling for mom to be there. Type a: insecure/avoidant (20%): avoid contact with mom especially after reunion.
