Alcoholics were substituting most of the calories they need to consume in their diet with alcohol itself. Resulting in a vitamin deficiency that affects the functioning of systems. There were distinctions in some of the elements in what was being forgotten by the patients (and what was being kept) Carl wernicke: described an acute clinical syndrome involving gait ataxia opthamoparesis, and confusion that sometimes evolved into chronic amnesia. Interested in trying to link behavioural functions to the brain. Localized attribution of function to the brain particularly the localization of damage and how it affects functioning.
