PSY280H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Sensory Neuron
Document Summary
Sensation and perception is a process: we are constantly bombarded by information that we receive from our surroundings. Rely on sensory systems to provide information; prioritize important info while some get ignored: sensation detection of stimuli by a sensory receptor (objective) Bottom-up processing relies on the properties of the stimulus (shading, patterns: data-driven approach perception directs cognition leads to decisions/ behavior, perception combination of processing the sensation aspects and past experiences (subjective) How sensory information is organized, interpreted, and experienced. Top-down processing relies on higher-level information (i. e. experiences, knowledge: what is known and expected to happen based on context, behavior is influenced by previous data (interpretation) This form of processing can give rise to illusions: stimulus thing/ event that evokes a specific reaction. Any kind of energy capable of eliciting a response of a sensory receptor: sensation and perception (7-step process) allow us to interpret what"s going on around us:
