Peirce - special meaning of what a sign was - a stimulus pattern that has some meaning. Stimulus patterns have meaning in different ways. Icon - pattern means something because it physically resembles that thing, mirror, images on buttons, signs (walk on crosswalk) stands for something else and resembles it.
