The greek physician hippocrates was the first to extend ideas on the relationship between bodily fluids and emotional temperament, including depression. The roman physician galen elaborated on this relationship. In galen"s time, depression was thought to result from an excess of black bile: during the early twentieth century freud conceptualized depression in terms of his psychodynamic theory of personality. Considered depression to be a result of fixation at the oral stage. If mood is to be considered along a continuum, normal moods reside primarily in the middle, with some expected normal variation. The severity and duration of mood changes required for a diagnosis is much stronger than a normal variation. There are two major categories of depressive disorders: Loss of interest or ability to feel pleasure (anhedonia)
