PSY240H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Freudian Slip, Behaviorism, Biology Of Depression
Document Summary
The current thought is that the etiological progression of a disorder is biological (brain malfunction) Biology and environment interact with each other to cause abnormal behaviour (biological predisposition and change in environment) Abnormal behaviour (brain dysfunction can"t do things) Number of different paradigms of how this occurs. One being biological (often prescribed medication, and that works less than 50%) Chemical imbalance (we are not good at balancing the brains chemicals) This is possibly due to interaction with environment. First person to suggest that it may have an internal basis (biology), but it comes from faulty thinking (thoughts in your head that we have to address) (psychodynamic) Freud"s theories couldn"t be tested (because it"s all in the mind) Subconscious underlined thoughts and conflicts that could not be observed (root of all psychopathology) If you keep talking at some point the subconscious will come out freudian slips) Conflict has to be at a subconscious level.
