PSY220H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fundamental Attribution Error, Conscientious Objector, Facilitated Communication
Document Summary
Influence can be completely unintentional and imperceptible by both influencer and person being influenced. Large numbers of people suddenly become ill and recover hours later with no apparent medical reason. Stress builds up without any outlet, epi provides a focus for anxiety and dissatisfaction. Conformity: a change in behavior or belief to accord with others. Public compliance vs. private acceptance: just because you publicly comply doesn"t mean you privately accept. Cohesion: tightly-knit groups are more likely to conform and less likely to dissent. Status: we are programmed to follow social hierarchy and indulge in status. Public response: very difficult to go against your own public response. No prior commitment: more free to dissent but also may have more reason to conform and establish oneself as a person who does not go against the public. Normative influence: going along with the crowd to avoid rejection, stay in people"s good graces, gain approval: leads to public compliance.
