Emergence of basic emotions: emotional states of the newborn are limited to pleasure and distress, but infants experience all basic emotions by 8-9 months. Social smiles infant smiles when they see another person. Show frustration when they cannot achieve a goal. Stranger wariness infants become wary in the presence of an unfamiliar adult. Influenced by: familiarity with the environment, the stranger"s behavior, and infant"s ability to interpret stranger"s emotions: emotional states of the newborn are limited to pleasure and distress, but infants experience all basic emotions by 8-9 months.
