Preterm infant: born prior to 38 weeks after conception. Number and severity of problems increase as birth weight and age-at-birth decreases. Children born very low in birth weight have more learning problems: lower levels of achievement in reading and math than moderately low-birth weight children. Stimulation programmes including kangaroo care help offset negative outcomes. A measure devised by obstetrical anesthesiologist virginia apgar, is used to evaluate a newborn baby"s condition. Health professionals look for five vital signs: breathing, heartbeat, muscle tone, presence of reflexes (e. g. , coughing), and skin tone. Reflex: an involuntary response to external stimulation (pgs, 118) Eye blink a baby"s eyes close in response to bright light or loud noise. Withdrawal reflex a baby withdraws its foot when the sole is pricked. Protects a baby from unpleasant stimulation: temporary. Babinski: stoke heel to toe spread toes + lift hallux; lack indicates lower spine deficit, disappears @12m.
