PSY210H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Methylphenidate, Face Perception, Orienting Response
Document Summary
We learn about the world through sensory and perceptual experiences. Babies cannot report their perceptual experiences, so researchers must devise reliable methods. After repeated exposure to a stimulus, babies will habituate to that stimulus (stop responding to it) S(cid:373)ell a(cid:374)d taste (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e refi(cid:374)ed through i(cid:374)fa(cid:374)(cid:272)(cid:455) (cid:894)e. g. a(cid:271)ilit(cid:455) to dis(cid:272)er(cid:374) (cid:373)other"s s(cid:373)ell, taste a(cid:374)d changes in breast milk. ) Infants are soothed if held when experiencing a painful stimulus, and especially so when also given something sweet. Rooting reflex and other reflexes present at birth and indicate sensitivity to touch. Infants perceive sounds prior to birth and can even differentiate between different types of auditory stimuli by week 34 of gestation. Infants hear well, though not quite as accurately as adults. Sound pitches in the range of human speech. Smallest pattern that can be dependable distinguished. Newborns and 1 month olds see at 1 meter what an adult sees at 60-120 meters. Acuity improves rapidly from one month to one year.
