Document Summary

Chapter 3: prenatal development, birth and the newborn. Begins when the egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube- period of rapid cell division that ends about 2 weeks after the zygote implants in the wall of the uterus. End of the period of the zygote- o. Cell lines differentiating physical structures form: ectoderm: hair, outer skin, nervous system, mesoderm: muscles, bones, circulatory system, endoderm: digestive system and lungs, by the end of this period, most organs are evident in some form. Neural tube development begins 2 weeks post-conception and finishes at 4 weeks post-conception. Folic acid deficiency causes the neural tube to not form completely. A shunt is surgically implanted to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid. Typically, spina bifida is associated with additional atypical development of the nervous system and decreased cognitive functioning. In rare cases, the tissue that forms a tail in humans does not reabsorb due to lack of inhibition of genes that produce this tissue.
