Document Summary
Lecture outline: encoding, storage, retrieval and forgetting, multiple memory systems. Memory is the process by which we observe, store, and recall information. Memories may be visual, auditory, or tactile (attached to smell) Memory is only what you paid attention to. Sensory detection - don"t decide what you pay attention to or ignore. Response selection - choose/mould environment. have to pay attention: based on genetic disposition and experience. Shallow processing - structural encoding (capital letters, what color, etc ) : not paying attention to meaning! Intermediate processing - default mechanism: phonemic encoding (bysound . rhyming, homonyms, etc ) Deep processing - semantic encoding (meaning or symbolism attached) Elaboration little examples/stories --> how we teach religion/morality/ Changes how we behave and act and how we perceive ourselves. Self referential encoding: we are self-centered. Remember/pay attention more: take old information that can be remembered, take new info and attach it to old.
