Lab # 1 measurement and experimental design. We can only study directly observable (measurable) behaviours. As long as we can measure behaviour we can do science. Measures behaviour, change one thing and then measure again. Getting a second result is because of what was changed (only thing that changed, that"s why). Dependent variable what is measured (behaviour) A good experiment controls everything, only one thing can change. We like to be able to prove that some variable (x) causes people to behave a certain way (y) while other variables (z) that might affect behaviour are held constant. To prove x causes y we have to measure the behaviour y twice: when x is present (to cause the behaviour, when x is absent (to see that the behaviour does not get caused) All of this done while controlling all other relevant causes. For a good lab, everything else should remain the same! So we set up experiments to find out:
