Document Summary

Dendrites: receive information from other neurons, each has small sector sites. Myelin insulates the nerve cell, speeds up conduction of nerve. Soon as it damages the tissue it sends a message at about 11 m/s to the brain (ie. hand burning example). There are other pain fibers that send messages 10 m/s. This is bc burning is very important, and this one is less serious and will ache for a few days. o. Stimulation of the nerve membrane can open ion channels in the membrane o. Na+ ions flowing in will depolarize the membrane (movement from -70 mv to say -60 mv) of the membrane. When you have two positively charged particles they bounce off each other. K+ ions flowing out of membrane will hyperpolarize the membrane (-70 mv to say -90 mv) Graded potentials are generated at the dendrites and are conducted along the membrane to the axon hillock.
