Document Summary
Consciousness: the determination to try to understand where it is and where it resides; altered states. The dorsolateral (along middle of head) prefrontal cortex is activated during conscious control tasks. The stroop task (colours, coloured in different colours) was associated with activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Executive control function (prefrontal cortex): control over what we pay attention to and where we send our resources. Our conscious awareness is limited in capacity and we are aware of only a small amount of the stimuli around us at any one time. Attention refers to the process by which we focus our awareness. ; attention is a limited capacity and can grow stronger. Attention goes away when you"re tired, excited, bored, etc. Worry about the present ad not the future. Notion that brief exposure to sub- threshold stimuli can influence awareness. Conscious thought requires higher input thinking (uses experience) Unconscious thoughts are fast, efficient and work without thought; evolutionary adaptive.
