Document Summary
Motivation relates to the study of the processes involved in goal-directed behaviour, which is often associated with specific emotions. This chapter will look at topics ranging from hunger motivation and eating to achievement motivation- the type of motivation that may have brought you to the study of psychology in the first place. Clark hull drive theories apply the concept of homeostasis state of physiological equilibrium or stability, to behaviour. Drive an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension. Drive theories cannot explain all motivation, homeostasis appears irrelevant to some human motives such as (cid:862)thi(cid:396)st fo(cid:396) k(cid:374)o(cid:449)ledge(cid:863) Incentive an external goal that has the capacity to motivate behaviour. Propose that external stimuli regulate motivational states. Drive and incentive models of motivation are often contrasted as push-versus-pull theories. Drive theories emphasize how internal states of tension push people in certain directions. Incentive theories emphasize how external stimuli pull people in certain directions.
