PHL105Y5 Lecture 29: 05 Two forms of libertarianism
Document Summary
So the problem facing any libertarian is to explain how an action that is not causally determined is in one"s control. On this view, free will is explained by the existence of agents who can cause actions not by virtue of any state they are in, such as a belief or a desire, but just by themselves, as. Hence, such agents are capable of causing actions without being causally determined to do so. The epicurean philosopher lucretius, (99 bce 55 bce) set out a rudimentary version of this position: free actions are accounted for by uncaused swerves in the downward paths of atoms. Robert kane sets out a more sophisticated contemporary version of this type of libertarianism. E. g. , if you are a good person and always choose to do the right thing, your choices are free so long as your having developed a good character was something for which you were responsible.
