Document Summary

Franklin set out to try and find the northwest passage, and he was a captain of the british royal. Set out on 2 ships (erebus and terror) to find this passage. They got stuck in ice over the winter, there is no food supply because everything is trapped under ice, and there are no animals or anything. British and american ships went out to search after 3 years of him missing. Franklin, paid for private expeditions after the initial royal navy ones. And after her expeditions failed, she went to the americans and they sent out an expedition to search for him. They agree because she convinces them that this can be their excuse to go out and explore the arctic. The franklin expedition and the search for flanklin ships got the americans to explore the arctic, and got them interested in the arctic, which lead them to purchase alaska.
