The liberals: critiques call them idealists, utopians, second oldest school of thought. Main assumptions: a lot harder to talk about assumptions of the liberals than the realists. Liberals are very eclectic in their theory, borrowing from everywhere. Critiques (i) wishful thinking: blind to the realities and dangers of the real world (ii) uneven theory building, critics from the left who make this critique. Want things to change and get better. E. h. carr; wanting peace or even working towards peace is no guarantee that you will achieve peace. You have to do more than hope for the best to survive. Not creating a coherent picture, lacking a meta-theory (over arching theme) Pol208 lecture 5 - july 11, 2017: spend too much of their time on description and not enough on analytical and normative aspects. Argues that countries that have a democratic form of government would not go to war with other countries that have a democratic form of government.
