Western liberal democracy is the final form of human government: At the end of the cold war, we are basically witnessing the end of history, or, rather the end point of (cid:373)a(cid:374)ki(cid:374)d"s ideologi(cid:272)al e(cid:448)olutio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d the u(cid:374)i(cid:448)ersalizatio(cid:374). The (cid:448)i(cid:272)tor(cid:455) of li(cid:271)eralis(cid:373) has occurred primarily in the realm of ideas or consciousness and is yet incomplete in the real or material world. Assumes that the fascist and communist challenges to liberalism are no more. Questions whether there are any other ideological competitors left (that is, contradictions in liberal society beyond that of class that are not resolvable): suggests yes, in religion (fundamentalism) and in nationalism. Implications for international relations: common marketization, lower likelihood of large-scale conflict between states in the absence of competing ideologies, but still rising level of ethnic and national violence.
