Document Summary

Questions to guide the reading of plato"s republic. Thrasmyachs" definition of justice is that justice is to the advantage of the stronger. Those in power make rules that benefit/ promote their own interest and keep subjects in oppression. He also notes that those who are unjust are benefited while those who act justly are at a disadvantage. The political significance of his definition is that it is the first time that justice is mentioned as a moral notion that norms we consider just are just convections of those who believe them. Justice is a unnatural restraint on our natural desire to have more. Socrates challenges him by first helping t admit that his definition promotes injustice as a virtue. Secondly he notes that justice is a set of rules that help a group act as a unit. Glaucon is not satisfied with socrates" argument against thrastmachus".
