Socrates wants to abolish this: the guarding class has an aim and the object and that is the citizens. He says lets look at one change that could be done that we don"t do in our existing polis. He says there is one change that would accomplish this polis: philosophers need to become kings or kings need to become philosophers: it is only when they rule that we rest from the evil that play. Who are these philosophers: lovers of wisdom, philosophy means lovers of wisdom, they love all wisdom and all learning. They need to govern with the truth and have knowledge of what is permanently not merely what appears to be or what we have opinions on: genuine philosophers love genuine knowledge not with appearances but with form. But what are forms: the painting is beautiful , or the sunset is beautiful .
