Document Summary

Realist view and liberalist view on international organizations. Liberals: optimistic that they are good and will do good things around the world. Realist: don"t promote as much, pessimistic, powers national interest. Us wasn"t part of it so no influence. Some countries in the un have powers that cannot be overwritten, veto countries that are smaller and less powerful. Realist; states (esp weak) search for security- have an inscentive to free themselves from anarchy. No over riding power able to enforce order. Each sovereign state isn"t able to protect security. Others are weaker and cannot be authors of own security. Greater powers allie with smaller powers only if there is something in it for thwm. System in which powerful do what they will and weak suffer what they must. Weak: small powers gain from io. Us never became a member, commit us to come to defense of ethiopia.
